I had heard alot about this film and alot about it's director. Well, I decided to buy it due to it's critical
acclaim. Rosemary's baby begins with a young couple(Rosemary and Guy Woodhouse) being shown an
apartment in Manhattan. The first sign that something is out of place is when there is a large wooden
secretary blocking the entrance to a closet at the end of the wall. Later they have dinner with their old
landlord “Hutch” and he explains about the evil history housed here in the Bramford building. Yes, the very
building that Rosemary and Guy plan on staying at.
It seems to me that Guy is an arrogant jerk. And a monster for what he does to his wife later on. Rosemary
seems like a nice girl considering she suggests having sex on the floor of their new unfurnished home. By
the way Hutch had told them the history of the place which included cannibalism, and heavy witchcraft
activity. I guess people want a nice apartment more than they want health. Or it could be that modern folk
don't believe in witches.

 Either way lets continue. Rosemary meets a nice recovering drug addict girl (Terry) that is staying with
the Castavets (an elderly couple) while washing clothes in the buildings laundromat. Terry has a foul
smelling piece of jewelry around her neck (more on that later ). The very next day Terry apparently
commits  suicide by jumping out the window. Now the Castavets and the Woodhouses become somewhat
close friends. It seems that all Guy really wants is to be a successful actor and all Rosemary wants is a
baby. Then all of a sudden they get what they want. Rosemary receives the stinkball necklace from the
Castavets, yes the same one that was around Terry's neck when she took the plunge. Later Rosemary
finds out that it is an article used in witchcraft.

 On a romantic night Guy, the loving husband gets his wife drunk and drugged so that Satan himself can
mate with her. He had made a deal with the witches to swap his firstborn child for a successful career,
hoping that Rosemary would understand this in the long run. Once pregnant, people around her start
dying in mysterious ways and she has a horrible stomach pain which lasts through most of the pregnancy.
One of these deaths was her main doctor, which has a book delivered to her by a friend after his death
explaining the witches' plot. Suddenly she becomes paranoid (rightfully so) and does not know where to
turn. After some bewilderment she is captured by the witches. There she has her child in an obscure
fashion. She is drugged during the delivery to the point that she can't remember much afterwards. They
hide the child, or beast from her until she wanders into a large hall. In a black rocker with a black veil is the
baby and every witch has joined the party.

 Now if I were reading this it may sound like an interesting movie. It is a boring movie. You NEVER see the
baby, you don't see the delivery, you don't see any cool witch action and you don't see any on- screen
deaths except a shot of Terry's head splattered on the pavement which is decent. Now, I have nothing
against Polanski's work. I have seen and really love ‘Repulsion‘. Honestly I also enjoy bad movies. This is a
crappy movie that may be fun to watch with friends, if they want to eat shit for an evening. That's what I
think. What baffles me is why is it so over rated ?
