BLOODLETTING (1997)
Here we have a serial killer romantic drama heavily influenced by Quentin Tarantino’s unique storytelling
style – they even mention him in the movie. The film is cheaply produced and shot on home video; but
the acting and story are pretty good. The film carries itself well and like I said earlier it’s style is taken
directly from Tarantino so if you can’t stand him you’ll hate this movie. I like Tarantino a lot and here I
get a micro, low-budget version of what could honestly be considered a typical Tarantino film.
Serena had her first orgasm the night that veteran serial killer Butch Harlow raped and killed her
friend. Now, she must logically seek out this man and perform serial killings herself to be fulfilled. She
concocts this shaky plan to blackmail Harlow into “teaching” her the art of serial homicide and keeping a
step ahead of the cops. She somehow finds the guy’s house and everything goes according to plan.
Harlow teaches her all that he knows and in no time they commit their first murder together which at the
end of the night finds them screwing in bed.
Now the relationship begins to hit heavy drama. Serena tells Harlow she wants to move in with him but
they have to kill her boyfriend first. They do said task and sooner than later they are arguing like a
married couple about living arrangements. Serena, the wild one, wants to commit murder almost every
single night. Harlow is not that ambitious. They argue for like a couple of long scenes about the life of a
murderer and how often to do the act (killing and screwing). On one whacky venture they talk
themselves into a couple’s home and kill them while dressed as a priest and a nun. One night they can’t
figure out what they want to do so they split up. Harlow goes to browse the local video store and Serena
goes for a drink at a bar. The video store owner, a hot lesbian (I know because she says it) closes the
store with Harlow still inside because she likes how he looks and wants to take him to the back room with
two of her other loopy friends and do drugs and philosophize about death, or anything really. One of
them, a pizza delivery guy says that he’d like to die from aids when the discussion of cool ways to die
surfaces. I have never been so glad to have a serial killer in the room than I am now. Harlow, after
listening to their shit for a while kills them all. Meanwhile Serena gets hit on by a Chemist/ex-bartender.
They go back to Serena’s place while Harlow is still out. The dude prepares a drink and drugs Serena. I
don’t know if he was planning on raping her, killing her, or both. Serena figures out what’s going on and
bites the guys cock off and kills him. When Harlow gets home they both feel better having spent a day
apart.
The next morning Serena wants to go kill again. After convincing Harlow to join her they pick up a
jogger at a park. They go to an abandoned warehouse and attack him, then they start attacking each
other! Harlow smashes her head with a tire iron and a knife, she fights back with a conveniently
concealed firearm? It just appears out of nowhere! Then they reveal to each other that they are not
really the person they said they were. For example Harlow isn’t really a serial killer, he just played along
and blah, blah, blah… The story falls apart at the end but at least they die together, with a handful or
murders between them confessing their love as they bleed out on the ground.
I know it sounds like a mixed up bag of crap, and it is, but it had clever, hip, dialogue, and the story,
for the most part was intriguing. I am one of the biggest fans of serial killer films and that’s what lured me
to this picture. The story is fresh and the acting is much better than what you’d expect on one of these
shot on video low budget projects. If you tolerate low budget video and like serial killers then you must
treat yourself to this. It’s quite charming.
