CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST (1980)
Many people consider this film to be the greatest cannibal film ever made. It is certainly Deodato’s
masterpiece. It is also riddled with controversy due to graphic scenes of human brutality and animal
torture killings. There is a division among viewers as to whether the movie is a gratuitous cannibal
exploitation flick or a mature, thought provoking, social and ethical commentary. After viewing this film
three times I tend to agree with the latter.
The story is about a group of four young and ambitious journalists known for their edgy
documentaries who set out to document and film a tribe of cannibals in South America. After two months
they have not returned so a rescue team is employed. They manage to recover the documentary
footage and discover that the journalists were killed by the cannibals. The reason being they were
violent jerks who thought they could fuck with the natives since they had guns and stuff. They terrorize a
village and set it on fire and later they take turns raping a native girl.
They’re fucked when ambushed in the jungle by the vengeful cannibals. One guy gets his dick cut off
and then is dismembered and eaten. The female journalist is stripped and fucked by a bunch of guys,
beheaded, dismembered and eaten as well. The footage ends but we can all safely assume that the
other two guys suffered a similar fate.
There is plenty of blood for the gore hound, extreme rapes for the sleazy and if you have a taste for
animal torture then you will leave satisfied. For those that are not fond of watching a live turtle killed and
disemboweled the Grindhouse Release has an animal cruelty free playback option. I recommend this
version for it also presents the film uncut. It is a two disc set and the second disc has featurettes and
interviews with the director and other cast and crew.
I was severely shocked the first time around. There was so much male nudity, gore and the animal
killings were disgusting. After watching this recently I am much more in control and can see the director’s
intentions more clearly. Let me tell you that if your not prepared this may be a mind-fuck at first.
Unfortunately this film is so over-hyped that you may not think it’s as crazy as you’d expect. I liked the
movie overall and had a good time watching it with friends. Deodato is an excellent director.
